Preventing Measles
MMR vaccination is the only way to prevent measles, attend the May Immunisation Clinics
- Everyone needs two doses, recommended to be given at 12 months old and at 3 years 4 months old.
- The vaccine is free for everyone and you are never too old to have the vaccine.
- If you or your child are unimmunised or have missed a dose, visit your GP or an immunisation clinic to catch up.
To make an appointment call 07469 351784 or your gp surgery. Walk-ins are welcome.
Attend the May Immunisation Clinics
Immunisations are one of the most effective ways to protect your family and community from serious infectious diseases like measles, flu, polio, and meningitis. With confirmed measles cases in the area, it's more important than ever to ensure that you and your children are up to date with all vaccinations. Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that can cause a range of distressing symptoms. Early signs often resemble a cold, including a high fever, runny nose, cough, and red, watery eyes (conjunctivitis). Within a few days, small white spots may appear inside the mouth, followed by a distinctive red-brown rash that typically starts on the face and behind the ears before spreading across the body.
Infected individuals often feel very unwell, with loss of appetite and extreme fatigue. Measles can lead to serious complications such as pneumonia, hearing loss, encephalitis (brain inflammation), and in severe cases, death—especially in young children and pregnant women.
To make it easier for families to catch up on missed or delayed vaccinations, several walk-in and bookable clinics are running throughout May across North Hackney. These clinics are open to all patients from North Hackney GP practices and Fernlea Surgery. Please bring your child’s red book to the appointment.
